Our Services
Florida Stone & Marble, Inc. (FSM) offers an array of services for natural stone products, beginning with restoration and maintenance of commercial and residential projects. We also offer repair, cleaning and replacement services.
Marble, granite and various other natural stones can be damaged by traffic wear; unevenness due to poor installation techniques; exposure to environmental factors or foreign substances; improper maintenance; scratches; staining and etching. Damages such as above can provide a dull and unattractive surface to any home or business. We have all of the solutions to these types of marble and stone problems.
Restoration: Restoration of a natural stone is a multi-stage abrasive grinding process that restores the original finish of the stone surface. It is a deep grinding process that will remove deep scratches, damage and lippage (unevenness). The surface is polished to the preferred appearance (i.e. flat, sheen, high sheen, etc.).
Honing: a grinding process that removes light wear and tear from normal traffic flow. It will also remove surface etch marks. A honed finish is a satin smooth appearance that reflects little light. A honed appearance is commonly seen on stairs, thresholds and high traffic floor areas because it can stand up to the wear and tear.
Polishing: an abrasive cleaning process that provides a glossy surface that will reflect light and enhance the stone’s natural variations. Polished finishes are typically used on walls, tops and floors with low traffic flow.
Cleaning: Cleaning is a process that will loosen and remove surface dirt and other impurities from the stone’s surface, pores and grout. Cleaning also helps to remove waxes and polymers that have become embedded.
Sealing: Sealers (acrylic and water-based) are chemicals that are applied to natural stone to help protect it from stains. These chemicals work below the surface to form a barrier. Sealing natural stone is crucial in some areas, not as critical in other areas, but always recommended.
Stripping: Removes topical coatings that block stone’s ability to naturally reflect, which causes spalling (when the stones crack, pop and shale). Some examples of common coatings are janitorial waxes, polyurethane, etc.
Maintenance Programs: Walking on stone surfaces causes abrasions which eventually lead to dull and worn surfaces. Maintenance of natural stones is very important to both the residential and commercial setting. A maintenance program consists of cleaning and polishing at regular service intervals with periodic restoration.
Grout Restoration: Restoration of grout consists of machine cleaning of grout joints and application of a grout stain that also functions as a sealer. Over the counter grout stains do not work unless the service is properly prepared to allow for adherence.
Stone Repair: Minor cracks and chips can be fixed by using epoxy fillers that can be colored to match your tile. Tiles should be repaired as soon as possible to keep the cracks from growing. This can help keep you from having the tile replaced.
New Installation Clean-up: Machine clean newly installed area to remove products from installation, such as grout residue. Floor is finished to the preferred appearance and sealed. Removal of lippage (unevenness) is not included in new installation clean-up.
Most of the above processes involve diamond pads and water, and may create very minimal dust. FS&M properly and thoroughly protects the surrounding surfaces from water movement. FS&M does not use topical coating or wax products for natural stones. Although these plastic polymers are designed to be refinished routinely, they are known to cause chemical damage to the stone over time.
